FAA checkride oral preparation · Private · Instrument · Commercial
Organize what you know, so you can explain it in any order.
The PAVE Checklist organizes everything the examiner can ask into four areas: Pilot, Aircraft, enVironment and External pressures. You review it around the cross-country your examiner assigns, so you can answer in any order and give the reason behind every rule.
Second Edition on Amazon from Nov 20, 2026: paperback $29.99, eBook $9.99. Add the Amazon link once live.

One real examiner question, worked through Pilot, Aircraft, enVironment and External pressures, with the regulation behind each answer.

The problem with question lists
The examiner does not ask in the order you studied.
Most oral prep is a long list of questions and answers. It works until the examiner moves from weather to your medical certificate to the fuel system in three questions. A memorized list has nothing to fall back on.
PAVE gives every fact a place. Each question lands in one of four areas. You place it, then answer from the structure, using your own aircraft, logbook and route.
The method
Four areas. Same order. Every checkride.
The FAA introduced PAVE in the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge as a risk checklist. The PAVE Checklist uses those four headings as the structure for the entire oral.
Pilot
Fit, legal and current: certificates, medical, endorsements, currency, privileges.
Aircraft
Airworthy on paper and in fact: documents, inspections, inoperative equipment, weight and balance, systems.
enVironment
Weather, route, airports, airspace, performance, navigation log and human factors.
External pressures
Identify, recognize and mitigate the pressures to go, and decide.
Signature routes
Three checkrides, built around real assigned flights.
KCMA · KAPC · KTVL
Point Mugu military activity, coastal fog and Class D at Napa, then mountain flying into a 6,268 ft non-towered field.
KVNY · L52 · KTVL · KVNY · KLGB
Los Angeles terminal airspace, an arrival with no instrument approach, cold-temperature corrections at Tahoe and an air carrier airport.
KCMA · KLGB · L35
Air carrier operations at Long Beach, then Big Bear City at 6,752 ft with displaced thresholds and a noise-sensitive departure.
Route graphics are schematic illustrations. Not for navigation.

The cost of a retest
One failed oral costs more than the preparation.
Before you can retest, an instructor must give you more training and a new endorsement (14 CFR 61.49). You pay the examiner again, rent the airplane again and wait for another date. Enter your own local rates.
Estimated cost of one retest
$1,328Not included: weeks waiting for another examiner date, proficiency lost while you wait and time away from work. Defaults are examples only: median C172 wet rental $176/hour (April 2026 U.S. survey, AeroCorner); instructor rates commonly $60–90/hour. Confirm sources and the retest-fee default.

Questions
Before you start
Does this replace ground school?
No. The PAVE Checklist is a structured review of material you learned in flight training, ground school or a home-study course. If a topic is new to you, close the gap with your instructor first.
Which checkrides does it cover?
Private Pilot (Airplane Single-Engine Land), Instrument Rating (Airplane) and Commercial Pilot (Airplane). Flight instructor ratings are covered by CFI Lesson Plans.
Does it cover the flight portion?
No. It prepares you for the oral (ground) portion, including planning the cross-country your examiner assigns.
Is the content current?
The Second Edition was checked against the current eCFR, AIM, ACS and FAA handbooks in October 2026. Regulations change; verify against current sources before your checkride.
The PAVE Checklist is an independent study guide. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Federal Aviation Administration.
